Young People
Sesame dramatherapy works with the core issues in the Every Child Matters and SEAL government campaigns, for every child to:
-
be healthy, stay safe, and enjoy and achieve (Every Child Matters)
-
manage feelings, develop self-awareness, empathy, social skills, and motivation (SEAL)
Dramatherapy supports a range of young people with a variety of needs
Young people referred to dramatherapy are often considered 'at risk', due to risk of exclusion, bullying, or social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.
Dramatherapy addresses these issues by providing the young person with a confidential, safe, reliable and nurturing environment in which to express their needs and develop their self-confidence. Emotions can be safely held within the play and activities (imaginative characters/stories/drawing/etc.), giving a non-confrontational outlet for difficult feelings. These feelings can then be reflected on at the end of the session, helping the individual to develop the skills to process and contain their own emotions.
The therapeutic relationship itself helps an individual to negotiate their feelings towards 'attachment'. This occurs within the one-to-one dynamic (directly with the therapist), but can also take place within group therapy between peer group members. Both situations help to develop the young person's ability to form and maintain healthy relationships.
The dramatherapist assesses the individual needs of the young person or people, tailoring each session for their stage of development. The sessions are therefore individually paced.
Working alongside other professionals
I am experienced in working alongside other professionals, giving feed back and communicating (in a manner which is appropriate to the confidentiality of the sessions). In this way the most progress is made due to the young person being provided with a consistent network of support, and a reliable environment. A final report (consisting of a brief outline of the work, with points of progress and any further recommendations) can also be produced if needed.
